How to Start
Your Club

Registering with USA Field Hockey is a straightforward process. Here's what to expect from first contact to fully active club status.

01
Determine Your Club Type & Structure

Identify the type of club you're forming — youth, adult, competitive travel, recreational, or league — and decide on your organizational structure (nonprofit, LLC, informal association). Review USAFH guidelines for your club category to understand requirements and benefits before applying.

⏱ Before You Register
02
Create a USAFH Account

Visit usafieldhockey.com and create a primary administrator account for your club. This account will serve as your club's hub for registrations, event entries, membership management, and communications.

03
Submit Your Club Registration

Complete the Club Registration form with your club name, primary contact, address, and club type. Designate a Club Administrator and at least one SafeSport-trained personnel. Pay the annual club registration fee based on your club category.

✅ Required Annually
04
Complete SafeSport Requirements

All coaches, administrators, and adult volunteers must complete the U.S. Center for SafeSport training. This is mandatory for all USAFH-registered clubs and is non-negotiable for the protection of athletes. Background screening through the USAFH system is also required for adult participants who work directly with minors.

🛡️ Mandatory for All Adults
05
Register Your Athletes & Coaches

Once your club is approved, add athletes as members through the club portal. Each athlete must hold a current USAFH membership. Coaches should hold appropriate USAFH coaching credentials or be enrolled in a credentialing pathway — resources are available through the USAFH Coach Education program.

Common Questions
About Starting a Club

Do I need to be a nonprofit to register a club?
No. USA Field Hockey accepts clubs organized as nonprofits, LLCs, informal associations, and school or park & rec programs. Your legal structure is up to you — what matters is completing the USAFH registration and SafeSport compliance requirements.
Can I register a club if I'm new to the sport?
Absolutely. USAFH and your state chapter have resources specifically for new club founders. A Club Development Consultation can help you plan your structure, connect with experienced coaches, and navigate your first season. You don't need to have played field hockey to build a thriving club.
How many athletes do I need to start a club?
There is no minimum athlete count to register a club. Some clubs start with a handful of players and grow organically. Others register ahead of a full inaugural season. You can register the club entity and add athletes as they join.
What is SafeSport and is it really required?
SafeSport is a federally mandated training and compliance program designed to protect athletes from abuse and misconduct. All adults — coaches, administrators, and volunteers — who work directly with minor athletes must complete SafeSport training annually. This is non-negotiable and applies to all USAFH-registered clubs.
What if there's already a club in my area?
Multiple clubs can operate in the same area — many metro regions have dozens of registered clubs serving different age groups, skill levels, and communities. Contact your state chapter to learn about existing clubs and find where your new program best fills a gap or serves an unmet need.
Can I form a league instead of a single club?
Yes. USAFH supports both individual club registration and league entity registration. If you're organizing multiple teams or clubs within a city or region, a league registration may be the right structure. Contact the state chapter for league-specific guidance.
Are there resources for adult and Masters clubs?
Yes. USAFH recognizes Masters-age players (35+) with a dedicated national championship pathway and programming support. Adult recreational clubs and social leagues are fully supported within the USAFH structure and can access the same club benefits as youth programs.
What's the difference between a local and statewide league?
A local league organizes play within a city, county, or metro region. A statewide league coordinates competition across the full state and typically serves as a qualifying pathway toward regional and national events. Statewide leagues are often affiliated with or managed by the state USAFH chapter.
